Hot on the heels of the infamous Adult Origami (“you must be a pervert, writing that”) comes this slightly less contentious offering from New Holland Publishing. Once again, it has been translated from English into American, complete with “new improved” gaudy cover, but identical contents. Completists will naturally wish to own both copies.
The book offers a number of designs intended to liven up your evenings at the pub (or “bar”). Each is accompanied by a page brimming with wit and erudite references. Or something like that. Clearly, it’s a subject that I (and several un-named friends like Brilly, Wayne, Alex, Paulo etc) are highly experienced in and the contents have had some serious road-testing over the years!
Aside from a laboriously researched section covering the history of pub origami, the book offers hours of fun for anyone with that peculiar drunken ability to concentrate on seemingly impossible tasks for inordinate amounts of time.
The book followed a similar writing routine to Adult, except I didn’t take the photos this time, nor did I even attend the photoshoot in a London pub, fearing that my keen eye for detail would be rendered useless by continuous beer swilling. Cover star Gareth Jones from New Holland did a sterling job of overseeing the shooting and stuck to soft drinks for all of ten minutes.
The Hogarth engraving inside was originally a full-colour version, but we could only get copyright release for the b/w version. Strange but true! A slight note of contention arose over the inclusion of my world famous “poppadom” design, which was renamed “paper crisp” on US insistence. I found this an affront to my curry-eating sensibilities, not to mention lost publicity for my poppadom group, but other than this, things more or less came out as I intended.
It’s been published in Spanish as a boxed set. There was a nice review in the Easyjet magazine and another in “Publican’s Monthly”.
