2024 by Hans Dybkjær
“Birds in Origami” is a softback book models by Simon Andersen (1946-2013). Simon Andersen (1946-2013). Andersen was a creative and highly gifted artist who sought meaning from his life almost in isolation from the origami world. His origami was carefully thought out, artistic yet playful and often with an underlying deep meaning.
The book is aimed at beginners but has extra levels of satisfaction for those more experienced in origami as you read about the design philosophy. The book contains 45 models, including 31 birds. All models are given a difficulty level, approximate time to fold (quite unusual) and sizes of paper for the model. There is a thorough explanation of symbols and techniques used. They are divided thematically according to design ideas and thereby provide a wealth of insight into folding and designing origami. It includes a foreword by Gideon Løwy, professor and brother to Simon Andersen.
Sections include: Preface. Symbols and technique. About Japanese folding. Folding sequences. Neobirds. Etiology. Blind fold. Origami nova. Stomach birds. Bubbles. Skin or bone. Square fold. Templates. You can see a 15 page PDF preview here https://tinyurl.com/andersen-origami
